It’s no secret that bankers are some of the very best paid people on the planet.
Research by the European Banking Authority (EBA) published in February suggested 2,086 City workers took home bonuses of €1m plus in 2013 - from a total of 3,178 across the EU.
Now salary benchmarking site Emolument has unveiled a list of the best paid jobs in banking and finance.
The top spots go to investment bankers, with salaries topping £600,000 for managing directors in structuring and trading. This works out as more than 10 times what an analyst in the same specialism can expect to earn.
Structurers, who “structure” or put together financial transactions for clients, are the very best paid employees in the finance sector, with an average combined salary and bonus of more than £650,000, according to new research.
Analysts can expect between 10 per cent and 20 per cent of their salary as a bonus, while managing directors receive up to 150 per cent of their salary over again as a bonus.
According to Alice Leguay, COO and co-founder of Emolument although the “golden-age” of bonuses may be well over, bankers are still by far the best employees in Europe.
“With public perception at an all-time low, the prospect of a fat paycheck probably helps make up for the social stigma of being a banker in our post-2008 world,“ said Ms Leguay.
Bankers are so well paid that the UK Government had to introduce a cap on bankers’ bonuses that came into effect in 2014.
The EBA revealed that the number of bankers earning seven figure salaries in pay and benefits in the EU fell from 3,530 in 2012 to 3,179 in 2013 even before the impact of a bonus cap - which has affected bonuses awarded since 2014 - came into effect.
