One Bolton Wanderers summer signing is delivering the goods after West Ham exit

As far as starts to the season go, tripling your goal tally from the previous campaign is hardly bad going.

Now Bolton Wanderers forward Oladapo Afolayan will want to add many more and continue contributing for the team, but it's been encouraging stuff so far.

The 23-year-old arrived on loan from West Ham back in January and made the permanent switch to the League One club this summer, following automatic promotion out of League Two.

Last year he was a threat in the final third, but only netted once in his 21 outings for the club.

Having been signed up on a three-year contract, the attacker was challenged by manager Ian Evatt to contribute more regularly with goals this time around.

The boss said: "We’ve said that he’s a really talented player and we’re delighted that he’s committed his future to us, but the one thing missing from his game is regular goals and when you’re playing in a front three, you have to add goals to your game."

Afolayan took that on board, while agreeing with his manager.

“It (score more goals) is something I obviously needed to do," he said after scoring his second of the season. "I need to help the team out more.

"With the players we have, we should all be scoring - I know I have it in my locker and hopefully I’ll get a few more.

"I don’t have targets, it’s just as many as I can get; keep getting in the right areas and the goals will come."

So far his goals - against AFC Wimbledon and Oxford United - have earned Bolton four points in League One.

And, Afolayan added to those two with another on Tuesday night against Port Vale, to help Wanderers to a 3-2 win in the EFL Trophy.

Goals is the key statistic at the end of the day, but there is another underlying metric and area of the forward's game that will please Evatt this season.

Afolayan is number one in the division for ball carries per 90 minutes, which evidences his confidence, attacking intent on the pitch and willingness to make things happen.

With 19 so far he is at the top of the pile, ahead of Ipswich's Kyle Edwards (18), Sunderland's Lynden Gooch (17) and Aiden McGeady (16) - as well as Rotherham United's Chiedozie Ogbene (16).
