One Ayrshire area has the highest Covid case rate in Scotland as virus numbers spike

An area of Ayrshire has the highest coronavirus case rate in Scotland, it can be revealed today.

The South Ayrshire zone has worst seven-day case rate per 100,000 population, according to Public Health Scotland data.

Lochside, Braehead and Whitletts currently has a case rate of 901.3, figures released today show.

That equates to 38 cases in the past week in the zone that houses 4,216 people — more than a third of South Ayrshire's cases in the last seven days

As a whole, South Ayrshire's case rate is the eighth-highest in Scotland with Stirling faring the worst at the moment.

But Lochside, Braehead and Whitletts' recent data trumps Fallin, Stirling (876.6) and Balanark, Glasgow City (610.3).

The grim news emerges as three South Ayrshire schools were impacted by coronavirus this week, two of which were closed.

Twelve teachers have tested positive at Braehead Primary. That school, along with nearby Heathfield Primary, have closed until Monday, March 22. Contact tracing is also being carried out at Dalmilling Primary but it remains open.
