One 2018 OKC ‘holiday’ will not be celebrated again this year

This time last year, Oklahoma City Thunder fans were still coming off the high from Paul George’s commitment he made to the team just before 2018 NBA free agency kicked off. The eventual 2019 MVP and Defensive Player of the Year candidate had his three-episode ESPN mini-series running, but broke the news for fans at a party hosted by his now former teammate, Russell Westbrook.

George staying was pivotal for the Thunder. Having lost Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors only a few seasons prior, the team was able to hold on to a top-flight player to go to battle alongside the face of the franchise in Westbrook.

Flashforward to present day and George is leaving, per his request, so he can play back in his home state for the Los Angeles Clippers with Kawhi Leonard.

To make matters worse, this news came less than 24 hours before the anniversary of “Paul George Day” in Oklahoma City:

Though it’s now been made clear — if there was somehow any confusion following the trade — July 7, 2019 will not be the second annual “Paul George Day” in Oklahoma City:
