'On to my next chapter' – Bristol Rovers midfielder confirms departure

Bristol Rovers midfielder Theo Widdrington has announced he has left the Gas following the expiration of his contract.

The 21-year-old joined Rovers two years ago from Portsmouth and played predominantly in the club’s development side.

The central midfielder – son of Rovers’ head of recruitment Tommy Widdrington – had loan spells at Hemel Hempstead Town and Welling United this season, but he failed to break into Ben Garner’s plans and is now looking for a new club.

“As my time at Bristol Rovers has come to an end and as I look to move on to my next chapter,” Widdrington wrote on Twitter.

“I want to thank everyone associated with the club, especially the boys for the last two years and wish them all the very best going forward.”

Widdrington made one senior appearance for the Gas, playing half an hour as a substitute in an EFL Trophy defeat against Exeter City in 2018.

That was his only taste of senior action in the blue and white quarters, though he did make 13 senior appearances in the National League South across his spells at Welling and Hemel this term, scoring one goal in the process.
