On this day: Rangers play first game under Pedro Caixinha

Even his most ardent defender would struggle to call Pedro Caixinha's time at Ibrox a success.

The Portuguese boss replaced Mark Warburton in March 2017, with Graeme Murty having taken charge of Rangers' 1-1 draw against Celtic in the interim.

On this day three years ago, Caixinha took charge for the first time, with Hamilton Accies the visitors to Ibrox.

While the current side's post-Dubai collapse has been extremely disappointing for fans, the difference in the current squad's depth compared to that of three years ago is striking.

Only three of the starting lineup from that day remain at Ibrox. Of those three, James Tavernier is the only first-team regular. Goalkeeper Wes Foderingham now deputises for Allan McGregor, while Jason Holt is on loan at St Johnstone.

STARTING XI : Foderingham, Tavernier, Wilson, Hill, Wallace, Holt, Toral, Hyndman, Miller, McKay, Waghorn

SUBS : Alnwick, Forrester, Hodson, Garner, Windass, Dodoo, Senderos

Tavernier crossed for Emerson Hyndman to put Rangers 1-0 up 26 minutes in, and Jon Toral set up Clint Hill for the second on 41 minutes. It was Hill's second goal in the space of a week, having scored the dramatic equaliser at Celtic Park.

Martyn Waghorn celebrates after scoring from the spot (SNS Group)

Martyn Waghorn scored a penalty after 55 minutes, and captain Lee Wallace completed the scoring 16 minutes from time with a finish from a tight angle.

At full-time Rangers were in third place, eight points behind Aberdeen and 30 behind Celtic.

Caixinha's time at Ibrox would last less than eight months. By the end of October he had been sacked.

A win percentage of 51.9% from 27 games fell way below what is expected of Rangers managers, and his reign was defined by the catastrophic 2-0 defeat against Progres Niederkorn.
