On this date: Lawrence Taylor beats Bam Bam Bigelow in WrestleMania main event

With MetLife Stadium, the home of the New York Giants, hosting WrestleMania 35, it seems only fitting to look back on when the greatest player in Giants history invaded WWE’s Super Bowl of events almost 24 years ago.

On April 2, 1995, Lawrence Taylor was the headliner for WrestleMania 11, as he squared off against Bam Bam Bigelow in the main event of the show.

It all started when Bigelow shoved Taylor during the WWE’s Royal Rumble event three months earlier in Tampa. At the time, L.T. was a spectator in the crowd. That led to national coverage and the two building up a feud that ended up taking place in the ring.

While Bigelow had fellow wrestlers in his corner on the outside, Taylor brought along NFL players like Steve McMichael, Reggie White, Ken Norton Jr. and former Giants teammate Carl Banks.

Some wondered how Taylor would fare in the ring, as he was a year into his retirement from the NFL, at 36 years old, and going up against a full-time wrestler in Bigelow. But L.T. did not disappoint, as he lasted over 11 minutes in the match and performed several key moves in the ring.

In the end, Taylor delivered a flying elbow smash off the ropes and pinned Bigelow for the victory. It was the only time L.T. ever stepped in the wrestling ring as an active competitor, but he definitely was able to hold his own in wrestling’s grandest stage.
