The government announced today that spending on school meals is to increase to at least 50p per child per meal in English primary schools, and 60p in secondaries. The move comes as celebrity chef Jamie Oliver delivered a 271,000-signature petition to Downing Street in support of his campaign to improve food standards in schools. We'll also be looking at what happens in school canteens in other countries around the world.

We're contacting our reporter John Aglionby in Sumatra for an audio update on rescue operations after Monday's earthquake, and we'll be updating our gallery of images from the scene of the disaster.

England's footballers, fresh from their weekend triumph over mighty Northern Ireland, take on Azerbaijan in a World Cup qualifier tonight. They'll be hoping to emulate the eight goals Poland put past the Caucasus team on Saturday, and Guardian Unlimited Football's Barry Glendenning will be providing minute-by-minute coverage from 7.45pm. In the meantime David Crouch is preparing a primer on Azerbaijan.
