In an era of crossovers and SUVs the fastback is a rare beast, so when Hyundai decided to launch one last year it seemed like a bold move.
While the aforementioned are fast becoming the South Korean manufacturer’s most popular models, the i30 Fastback is the one with the looks.
The Fastback’s roofline tapers towards the rear, where it meets an integrated rear spoiler and continues to the rear lights, enhancing the car’s wide stance, improving aerodynamics and creating a distinctive silhouette.
And while the rakish shape might mean there’s slightly less headroom for backseat passengers, there’s plenty of legroom so adults can still sit comfortably.
Lift the tailgate and you will see a sensible sized boot capable of taking some 450 litres of luggage, increasing to 1,351 litres with the split rear seatbacks folded down.
The Fastback’s interior looks almost identical to the hatchback’s, which means everything’s where you’d expect it to be.
While some of the plastics used might not feel as nice as some of its European competitors, the Fastback feels solid inside and comes with plenty of kit. Standard on all models is an easy-to-use eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth, DAB digital radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring systems.
The Fastback is available in five trim levels: SE Nav, N Line, N Line +, Premium and Premium SE.
N Line trim features exterior and interior design elements carried over from the Fastback N model, with chassis refinements and suspension setting changes to achieve a more dynamic drive.
As with all i30’s, the Fastback N Line offers a high level of standard safety equipment including Lane Departure Warning Systems, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Hill Start Assist Control.
From £23,985, the i30 Fastback N Line + 1.4 T-GDi six-speed manual – the model we had on test – builds on the N Line trim level by offering heated faux leather and suede sports seats with electrically adjustable lumbar support for both driver and passenger, manual height adjustment and driver’s side memory function.
N Line + trim also includes dual-zone climate control, heated steering wheel, LED headlamps and automatic rain-sensing windscreen wipers.
The N Line + is also available with a seven-speed DCT transmission.
The i30 Fastback is a practical, stylish alternative to a typical family hatchback. It looks good, offers a comfortable and impressively quiet ride, and has enough on-board kit to ensure contented motoring. Hyundai’s five-year unlimited mileage warranty adds to its appeal, too.
