'On the brink of change - the American nightmare finally appears to be over'

The American nightmare finally appears to be over.

For four years the nation has endured the tawdry, toxic and unedifying spectacle of Donald Trump in the White House.

This dismal chapter in the country’s history is on the cusp of being closed.

While the counting is not complete it is all but assured Joe Biden is the President Elect.

America can now forsake the darkness and carnage of the Trump administration and embrace the prospect of a brighter tomorrow.

Change is coming. And there is no better sign of that change than seeing Kamala Harris set to become the first woman and first black American to serve as Vice President.

Trump’s refusal to accept the result is a final act of ignominy by a President who has brought shame on his office.

His unfounded attacks on the voting system threaten democracy.

Abraham Lincoln said the constitution and the rule of law were the “political religion of our nation”. Trump has worshipped at the temple of deceit, greed and disgrace.

Thank God he is going.

United for lost

This Sunday will honour the memory of the fallen.

Covid restrictions mean people will not be able to gather as normal for Remembrance services and commemorations.

That is why the Mirror wants everyone to pay their respects with a two-minute silence on their doorstep at 11am this Sunday.

This simple idea is being backed by former military servicemen and women, all the main party leaders as well as stars from the worlds of sport, television and entertainment.

While we cannot be together in person, we will be united in spirit.

I’m a Chill-eb

Covid restrictions mean this year’s I’m a Celebrity is being filmed in Wales.

They may need to change the title to I’m a Celebrity Get Me Winter Wear.
