On loan Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez suffers potentially serious ankle injury

Alexis Sanchez could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury while on international duty with Chile.

The on-loan Manchester United attacker dislocated tendons in his ankle during Chile's goalless draw with Colombia on Saturday, the Chilean FA confirmed.

Sanchez will return to Milan for scans to determine the extent of the problem.

A statement on their website read: "The medical team of the Chilean National Team informs that the player Alexis Sanchez presented in the second half of the match with Colombia [suffered] dislocation of left tankle peroneal tendons with retinal compromise."

Chile coach Reinaldo Rueda spoke about Sanchez's injury after the game.

"Alexis seems to have a suffered a small blow to the ankle," he told Radio Cooperativa. "Tomorrow we will evaluate all aspects more thoroughly.

"We played against an opponent with different physical qualities."

Sanchez is currently on loan at Inter Milan having endured a difficult 18 months at United after signing from Arsenal back in January 2018. The 30-year-old has made four appearances for the Italian club this season.

He missed their last league game against Juventus through suspension after he was sent off in the win against Sampdoria, his full Inter debut, following a second booking for diving.
