On-loan Huddersfield Town man on his future and Bolton Wanderers positives

Ben Jackson says he has learned a lot from fellow Bolton Wanderers team mate Declan John during his loan spell with the club.

The left-back was snapped up in the January transfer window from Huddersfield Town and has managed five appearances for Ian Evatt's side.

Game time hasn't been regular for the 20-year-old but last weekend saw him score a crucial goal in Wanderers' promotion bid, as they beat fourth placed Morecambe 1-0.

Being in and out of the team hasn't been easy for Jackson but the positive atmosphere around the club, and having a player with John's experience to look up to, has certainly helped.

“He’s a great player so even when I’ve not been playing, it’s been great to learn from him," he said. "Watching him in training and when I’m in the stands watching him in games, because he’s done a lot in his career that I’ve not had the chance to do yet.

"It’s been great, I’m only 20 and he’s a few years older than me and he’s done things in the Championship, played in Scotland, so I want to aspire to be like that and get to that level as well.

"So it’s been good to watch him, see what he does well compared to what I do and then work my game on that.

"I think last year I was at Stockport and I had a similar situation where I was in one week and out the other week.

"I think that’s really helped me just stay positive whenever I’m in a situation where I’m not involved, and I’ve just got to keep my head because you never know.

"Last Tuesday, I wasn’t expecting to be involved but after Tuesday you’ve just got to be ready and able to take that step.

"I think the best thing about this squad is everyone’s there no matter whether you’re in the squad, whether you’ve started 30 games and I only came in January like quite a lot of the lads did.

"But every game, everyone is there, everyone is chanting and even though there is no fans, you can hear the lads from the stands, so it’s brilliant. Every tackle and every clearance, you just hear them and it helps spur you on really.”

And on the summer, when Jackson will return to the Terriers, the defender kept it short and sweet - saying he will head back and see what happens.

“That’s the plan," he said. "I’ve just got to go back in pre-season and just work as hard as I can and get going."
