A 26-year-old youth died after crashing his vehicle into a truck on Airport Road late on Tuesday night. Puneet Sabarwal, a resident of Morinda, was returning home after celebrating his birthday with friends in Zirakpur.
As he approached the Sohana gurdwara light point around 10.30pm, he failed to negotiate a sharp curve and his Hyundai Verna rammed into a truck after jumping on to the other side of the median strip.
“Prima facie it looks the driver lost control of the vehicle at a sharp curve as he was speeding.”
The car was badly damaged in the accident. Puneet died on the spot. Puneet used to work with his father, Jagmohan Sabarwal, who owns a hardware shop in the Morinda market.
“We received a call from police around 11pm, informing us about the accident,” said Lalit Sabarwal, a relative. “Puneet’s parents are in shock and inconsolable.” Puneet’s younger brother, Karan, 22, studies in New Zealand. The family will perform his last rites after Karan’s arrival, likely on Thursday.
Police have initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). The body has been sent for the postmortem to the Phase-6 civil hospital.
“Prima facie it looks the driver lost control of the vehicle at a sharp curve as he was speeding,” said investigating officer Bakshish Singh. “However, we are awaiting the postmortem report.”
