On first trip to Lake of the Woods, Minnesotan gets stuck and stranded for more than 24 hours

BAUDETTE, Minn. _ Allen Foster had never been to Lake of the Woods until recently, when he and a buddy, Derick Kubitz, set out from Wheeler's Point near Baudette on an ice road plowed 22 miles onto the lake in the farthest northwest reaches of Minnesota.

It's a trip neither of them will forget anytime soon.

Traveling the ice road in a Dodge Ram four-wheel-drive pickup and towing a 21-foot Ice Castle fish house on wheels, the fishermen were excited to reach a distant fishing hotspot the resort had suggested they try that Thursday afternoon, Feb. 21.

So excited, in fact, they hadn't checked the extended weather forecast, Foster says.

"Of course, the guy (at the resort) never said a word about any storms or anything, and I wasn't paying any attention," Foster, of Bemidji, said.
