On-demand bus trips up 73 per cent spike in July: Keolis Downer

LAKE Macquarie's on-demand transport has increased its patronage by almost three-quarters, Keolis Downer says.

The transport operator said passengers in July recorded 4800 trips, which Hunter director of corporate affairs Andrew Fletcher said indicated residents were embracing the service.

The mode's footprint expanded in June to incorporate Charlestown, Dudley, Whitebridge, Gateshead, Redhead, Warners Bay, Mount Hutton, Windale, Tingira Heights, Eleebana, Croudace Bay, Valentine, Belmont North and Belmont.

"Around 75 per cent of our customers are traveling to their local shops whether that be in Charlestown, Lake Macquarie Fair, Warners Bay, Belmont Shops or Jewells," Mr Fletcher said.

"It's no surprise that Charlestown continues to be our most popular destination as a key transport hub and major shopping centre."

"We know the service is getting people to where they want to go, with around 38 per cent of trips unable to be completed on a regular bus route," Mr Fletcher said.

The service is booked via an app or phone, collecting and delivering customers between selected street corners.

Mr Fletcher said two thirds of customers booked via app while 34 per cent called in their requests.

"Over 66% of customers are loving the ease of booking the service via the Newcastle Transport On Demand app, while 34% are opting to book over the phone," Mr Fletcher said.
