Gusty winds, ominous grey skies and a few scattered rain drops didn't hinder the fun at the shores of Lake Burley Griffin on Tuesday.

Hundreds headed out to the six hubs installed around the lake as part of the COVID-friendly Great Aussie Picnic.

Each area has its own theme, like jazz and Aussie rock, and has food trucks and licenced bars, expect for the Ankle Biters hub for young children.

On Tuesday afternoon, the children's area at Kings Park quickly filled up with families gathering to enjoy a picnic and live music.

The afternoon thunderstorm forecast didn't stop Jennifer Larcombe from joining her friends and little ones in enjoying the day.

"If it starts to rain, we'll just make a run for it," she said.

After the intense heat which has engulfed Canberra since Friday, the cool breeze was a nice change, Emma Cooper said.

Children were up and dancing to the list of acts performing throughout the day.

For those who weren't participating in the planned events, a walk, ride or scoot around the lake satisfied.

The bridge to bridge walk was packed with pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooter riders making their way around the lake.

Picnic blankets scattered the lawns stretching from the Aspen Island to Commonwealth Park and police were patrolling the area.

While for many the day was a chance to relax and spend time with family, hundreds of Canberrans attended the Invasion Day rally at Parliament house, protesting Australia Day.
