Omicron variant: New Covid-19 travel rules come into force today

Omicron continues to spread throughout the UK, and indeed the world, causing the government to bring new measures into force.

A big new rule came into force this morning for anyone coming to the UK from abroad: from December 7, anyone entering the UK from abroad must take a Covid-19 test before they travel - regardless of their vaccination status and which list their origin country is on. The test can be a lateral flow or PCR test, and it must be taken in the two days before you travel.

This follows pressure from the Labour party, whose new shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper, implored the government last week to reintroduce pre-travel testing on people coming in to the UK amid the uncertainty around omicron.

It also follows another change last week which saw the government say anyone arriving to the UK from abroad must take a PCR test in the two days after they arrive. Such travellers must also quarantine at home while they await their test result.

The rules are stricter, as they have been for some time, for those not fully vaccinated or under 18. These people must quarantine at home for 10 days and take a PCR test on day eight after they arrive in addition to the rules above.

If you're coming from a red list country, you must take a pre-departure test, a day two test, and a day eight test. You must also quarantine in a government-approved hotel for 10 days. The red list currently comprises: Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
