Omicron symptoms to look for in kids - including 'unusual' sign spotted by GP

Experts have given details of the specific symptoms of Omicron to look out for in children - and the signs include one 'unusual' indicator spotted by a GP.

As well as the usual cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, a sore throat and headache, parents are also being told to look out for a rash.

According to one doctor, around 15 per cent of children who tested positive for the Omicron variant of coronavirus, also presented with a rash, the Mirror reports.

Dr David Lloyd told Sky News: "Things like fatigue, a headache and loss of appetite seem to be quite important, as does a rash.

"We’ve always had a small cohort of patients with Covid who are getting funny rashes but up to 15 per cent of the Omicron children are getting an unusual rash.

"So we’re starting to learn a little bit more about the virus and we are starting to look out for it."

Omicron tends to cause cold-like symptoms and appears to be milder than previous circulating coronavirus variants, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Other symptoms children appear to develop include a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, and a loss or change to sense of smell or taste.

Parents are being urged not to take flu-like symptoms lightly and to get their children tested.

It comes as kids as young as five are set to be given Covid jabs as the fight against the Omicron variant ramps up - with the NHS "preparing for a mass vaccine drive" in schools.

The latest figures show that cases in nurseries have risen by 38 per cent in one week.

According to figures from the ZOE Covid study, cases are set to top 200,000 a day in the coming days, with a 'worrying' rise in one vulnerable age group.

Currently, there are 192,290 new daily symptomatic cases of Covid in the UK on average, based on PCR and LFT test data from up to three days ago - an increase of 33 per cent.

Cases are rising in all regions, particularly in the North West, but cases continue to be highest in London.

The rise in cases appears to be slowing in people up to the age of 55, but rising sharply in the 55 to75 age groups.

The report says this is a "worrying" trend given this group is more at risk of hospitalisation.

Dr Claire Steves, a scientist on the study and reader at King’s College London said: “The number of daily new symptomatic Covid cases are more than double what they were this time last year and we are just a day or two away from hitting over 200,000.

"However, the exponential growth in cases appears to have stopped, and the rise is more steady. Hospitalisation rates are thankfully much lower than this time last year, but they are still high, especially in London.

"The ZOE data is showing that cases are still on the rise in 55-75 year olds so unfortunately it’s likely that this will translate into more hospital admissions in the New Year."
