Omicron covid variant: First case confirmed in Wales

The first case of the new Omicron coronavirus variant has been discovered in Wales.

The case is located within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, which covers Wales’ most densely populated region, just 44 miles from Bristol and a similar distance to the Gloucestershire border.

The Welsh Government has stated that they believe this case is linked to international travel.

The new variant of covid, which was initially identified in South Africa, was first detected in the UK on Saturday (November 27).

Now Wales joins the list of nations with Omicron infections: England, Scotland, Australia, Canada, Israel and Japan.

Though the science is still unclear as to the effects of the variant, it is worried that the strain will be able to re-infect those with covid antibodies.

Before this case was discovered, the Welsh Health Minister Eluned Morgan said of the new strain: "this is clearly a very worrying time for us all."

A spokesperson for the Welsh Government said: "We are prepared to respond rapidly to emerging variants of concern and intensive investigations and robust public health action are being taken to slow any spread.

"The health impact of the Omicron variant is still being assessed. Currently there is no substantial evidence to suggest the Omicron variant will lead to a more severe form of illness but the data is being kept under constant review.

"As we better understand this variant we will be able to determine the next steps.

"In the meantime, sticking to the rules, following the steps which keep us safe and taking up the offer of a vaccine continue to be the best way to protect ourselves and the NHS."
