Shigeru Omi, chairman of the government's subcommittee on novel coronavirus measures, said cases were likely to increase further at a House of Councillors' Cabinet Committee meeting Thursday, following the record 9,582 new cases logged in Japan on the previous day.
"I feel a great sense of crisis. There is no doubt that infections will surge," Omi said.
Citing such concerns as people getting used to the pandemic, the highly infectious delta variant, the summer vacation and the Tokyo Olympics, Omi said, "Such factors will not reduce infections, but there are many factors that can increase them."
"The pressure on the medical system will soon be more severe. It is time for the whole of society to share the sense of crisis," he warned, adding that the government should "send out a clearer and stronger message than ever before."
