Omega gains India approval for Covid-19 antibody test

Medical diagnostics firm Omega has had its Mologic ELISA antibody test approved for Covid-19 in India.

The company based in Alva, near Alloa, said it could not put a value on potential sales but described the country as a "key target market".

India has had more than 585,000 confirmed cases of the disease and over 17,000 deaths but has been accused of under-reporting.

Omega is already producing 46,000 of the CE-Marked test developed by Mologic to be used on patient samples from hospitals and GPs in the UK.

On Wednesday, India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organization, part of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, published a list of kits approved for testing of Covid-19, which included Omega's ELISA test.

Omega said it was confident of securing adequate technical data for it to gain approval for sale in the country with a population of 1.3 billion. It said its direct sales team in India would set out to secure orders.

Shares in the AIM-listed company were up more than 4% at 42.6 pence this morning.

CEO Colin King said: "I am delighted that we have received approval to sell the Mologic ELISA antibody test in India as this is a key target market. We have an established direct sales team and we believe a reliable and high-performance antibody test will be very attractive to our laboratory customers.

"India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and has a population of over 1.3 billion people. Clearly this is an important market for us to target and I look forward to updating shareholders on our commercial traction."

This week, Omega announced it had reached the important design freeze stage for a separate Covid antibody test which can be used to produce quick results at home. The lateral flow device is now ready for regulatory approval.
