Ombudsman reveals what he has told Richard Masters after flurry of Newcastle takeover complaints

Richard Masters has been urged to treat Newcastle United supporters' takeover concerns with the 'seriousness they merit' by the Independent Football Ombudsman (IFO) - who have called on the Premier League's chief executive to 'address the legitimate request for transparency'.

Mike Ashley, Amanda Staveley and a number of North East MPs have urged the Premier League to the hold the club's upcoming arbitration hearing in public.

Those calls have coincided with Ashley's separate anti-competition claim being delayed by another week after the Premier League were granted a further seven days to 'file and serve its evidence' by Hon Mr Justice Roth.

Supporters are desperate for a resolution and the IFO have received a flurry of complaints from fans in the last few days about the way the Premier League have handled the club's takeover saga; such has been the volume of messages, the ombudsman, himself, Professor Derek Fraser, is unable to reply to each individual message.

Although the ownership of the club and the Premier League's owners' and directors' test do not fall under the IFO's remit - the body was set up by the Football Association, the Premier League and the Football League in 2008 to investigate complaints which have not been resolved by these organisations - the ombudsman has written to Masters.

ChronicleLive has seen a copy of the message Professor Fraser has sent to Masters after the ombudsman forwarded on supporters' complaints to the Premier League.

"I trust you will take these concerns with the seriousness they merit and respond in a way which will address the legitimate request for transparency," the ombudsman wrote.

The Newcastle case, and the need for better communication with supporters, will feature in the IFO's forthcoming annual report, which will be published next month.

Newcastle fans previously contacted the IFO last summer and after noting how the Newcastle United Supporters' Trust (NUST) had requested that the Premier League should make a statement to fans explaining how the takeover was handled, last August, the ombudsman advised the top-flight to do as much.

This did not go unnoticed and even Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was 'pleased' that the ombudsman had 'committed to advising the Premier League to provide a statement'.

Masters ultimately wrote a letter of reply to Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah, which was made available to the public, as the Premier League chief broke his silence on the matter before he was quizzed by the NUST a few weeks later.
