Oma’s Pride of Avon, Connecticut, is voluntarily recalling one specific lot of its Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe frozen raw dog food after the product tested positive for Salmonella, according to an official announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

How to Identify the Recalled Oma’s Pride Dog Food

The recall covers only Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe, 6 lb bags identified as Lot BB012729. The product is a frozen raw dog food sold in a 6 lb gusseted stand-up pouch containing 12 individually wrapped, 8 oz vacuum-sealed portions. No other Oma’s Pride products, sizes, or lots are affected by this recall.

The FDA received a consumer complaint, then collected and tested a sample of the product, which came back positive for Salmonella. Three illnesses have been reported in connection with the complaint. Oma’s Pride says it is continuing its investigation to determine the source and root cause of the contamination.

Recalled Dog Food Was Distributed in 11 States

The recalled lot was distributed to retail and wholesale accounts, as well as directly to consumers through online orders, in the following states: Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The product was shipped frozen.

Salmonella poses a risk both to pets that eat the food and to people who handle contaminated products. The FDA notes that humans can be infected through contact with the product or surfaces it has touched, particularly if hands are not thoroughly washed afterward. Symptoms in people can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. More serious complications can include arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Anyone experiencing these symptoms after contact with the product should consult a healthcare provider.

Pets infected with Salmonella may show lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, or may display only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected pets can also carry and spread Salmonella to other animals or people. Pet owners whose animals have consumed the recalled product and are showing symptoms should contact a veterinarian.

What Consumers Should Do With the Recalled Dog Food

Consumers who purchased this product can contact Oma’s Pride by calling 1-800-678-OMAS, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST, or by emailing hello@omaspride.com. The recall is being conducted voluntarily in coordination with the FDA.

Shoppers who buy frozen raw pet food, particularly in the affected states, should stop feeding the product, dispose of it safely, don’t sell or donate it, and wash and sanitize pet-food bowls, cups, storage containers, hands and utensils that contacted the recalled food.
