
Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah stressed on Sunday that fighting the novel coronavirus can only succeed when everyone respects preventive measures.
In a speech, he said the country was delighted with the return of nationals stranded abroad in time for the holy fasting month of Ramadan, which starts next week.
The government has exerted strenuous efforts to ensure their return, he stated.
The returnees must respect quarantine measures, the Emir demanded.
Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nasser al-Mohammed al-Sabah had announced the arrival of the first flight transporting Kuwaitis from abroad. The flight, from Dubai, had landed in Kuwait on Sunday morning and more will follow.
Kuwait on Sunday reported one new fatality from the coronavirus. An Indian resident, 60, was receiving intensive medical care for ten days and used to suffer from chronic health problems.
His death brings Kuwait’s total to seven.
Health Ministry spokesman Dr. Abdullah al-Sanad said the country has registered 164 new virus cases, raising its count to 1,915.
Meanwhile, Oman registered on Sunday 86 new coronavirus cases, taking the sultanate’s total to 1,266.
The health ministry said 15 of the newly diagnosed patients are Omanis, while the rest are foreigners.
It reported six fatalities and 233 recoveries.
The ministry urged the people to adhere to the preventive measures and stay at home unless necessary.
India, meanwhile, has agreed to send hydroxychloroquine tablets to the United Arab Emirates to be used for treating COVID-19 patients, the Gulf state's embassy in New Delhi said.
"The first shipment of medicine, currently on its way to the UAE, includes 5.5 million pills for treatment of patients with COVID-19," the embassy tweeted late on Saturday.
