Omagh vigil to remember murdered schoolteacher Ashling Murphy

A vigil is to take place in Omagh on Friday in memory of Ashling Murphy, who was murdered as she went for a run in Tullamore, Co Offaly on Wednesday.

The vigil in the Co Tyrone town will take place at the Dún Uladh Cultural Heritage Centre, Omagh at 6pm.

The talented musician played alongside several members of the Blackwater Ceili Band, who have organised the event in her memory.

Ashling’s death has shocked and saddened communities right across Ireland, and the music group said they were ‘completely heartbroken’ at the cruel death of the 23-year-old teacher.

“We are completely heartbroken and shocked at the cruel loss of our dear friend, Ashling Murphy from Co. Offaly,” the Blackwater Ceili Band said in a post.

“Ashling was a talented musician specially selected by Comhaltas in 2017 for a tour of" Ireland and UK alongside our band leader Ryan Hackett.

“Most recently, she was also part of the National Folk Orchestra of Ireland alongside our band member Michael Coney.

“Ashling was a talented and aspiring young lady with her entire life ahead of her, and deeply committed to our culture and her vocation as a teacher.

“Please join with us tomorrow to remember Ashling, standing in solidarity with her family and friends.

“A vigil will take place at Dún Uladh Cultural Heritage Centre, Omagh at 6pm, Friday 14 January.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Ashling's family at this tragic time.”
