The first Omagh Music Legends Weekend has been hailed as a great success as it celebrated some of the town’s most famous musical talents.
The weekend coincided with the first anniversary of the passing of Pio McCann, the much loved showband musician and broadcaster from the Co Tyrone town.
The event also celebrated the work of the influential multi-genre musician Arty McGlynn, as well as others involved in the music industry from Omagh.
A series of performances took place in the Strule Arts Centre during the weekend, while an exhibition showing off some of the best of the showband industry will remain in the venue until October 30.
Adding that the event was the first step towards marketing Omagh as town stacked with musical legends, Sinn Fein councillor Barry McElduff said there were plenty of plans in place to mark the town’s musical heritage.
“Last weekend we had the Music Legends Weekend and they were amazingly successful shows and this is only the start of it,” McElduff told MyTyrone.
“I’m going to make the suggestion that Omagh goes forward in the future branded as Music Legends Country.
“We could list them to the cows come home about the musical greats that came out of Omagh, their contribution to the showbands and individual stars.
“The success of both shows is just the tip of the iceberg. We’ve already got a resolution and funding set aside for the development of a music heritage trail in Omagh.
“The wealth and heritage of Omagh is truly unique and I’m excited about it and others are excited about it, and it’s something we are going to be developing in the months and years ahead.”
