Omagh crash victim Ryan Mahoney "another tragedy to hit the close knit community"

A close-knit community has been left devastated following the death of a teenager in a road traffic collsion.

Ryan Mahoney, 17, from Augher , Co Tyrone was a passenger in a Black Audi which was struck in a head-on collision with a white Mercedes at around 8.25pm on the on Sunday night.

Three other people, a male and two females, who were in the Audi with Mr Mahoney were taken to hospital along with the female driver of the other vehicle. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening at present.

A former pupil of St Ciaran's College, Ballygawley, the school issued a statement saying: "All at St Ciaran’s deeply regret the sad news of the untimely passing of our former pupil Ryan Mahoney and offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends. St Ciaran, pray for him."

Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew expressed her sadness at the news of another tragedy for the village.

She told Belfast Live: "It's so sad to hear of yet another tragedy to hit the close knit community of Augher who have suffered a number of terrible incidents over the years.

"I want to extend my sincere sympathies to the Mahoney family and extended family and I hope the others injured in the collision will make a full recovery. Sometimes words just aren't enough for tragedies like this."

SDLP Councillor for the Clogher Valley area Sharon McAleer said: "This is such a terrible tragedy, the loss of a young life. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time. No words can describe what they must be going through right now.”

Friends and family of the 17-year-old have been paying tribute to him on social media following the shock news on Monday morning.

One friend posted: "Rest easy lad another taken far far too soon! You will be missed by everyone, gone but never forgotten."

SDLP West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan said the community of Omagh have also been left shocked by the news.

He added: “People in Omagh are devastated today. There’s a real sense of shock in the community after people woke up to the tragic news that a young man lost his life in a car crash on the Clanabogan Road last night.

“To lose a young man with so much to give to his family and his community in these circumstances is absolutely heartbreaking. My thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time. I know the whole community will offer them our support in the days and weeks ahead."

Inspector Will Brown is appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact police on 101, quoting reference 1815 21/07/19.

The Clanabogan Road has since reopened to traffic.
