A man has appeared in a court in Northern Ireland charged with the Omagh bomb massacre in which 29 people were killed – the single biggest atrocity of Ulster’s Troubles.

A judge at Omagh magistrates court was deciding whether there was enough evidence against Seamus Daly to warrant a trial. A number of witnesses are set to give evidence over two days.

Daly, originally from the Irish Republic, was arrested in South Armagh in 2014 in connection with the Real IRA bomb attack on the County Tyrone town.

As well as facing 29 murder charges, Daly is accused of causing the explosion in August 1998 and possessing the bomb. He also faces charges relating to a Real IRA bomb plot in Lisburn in April of that year.

This is the first time since his arrest two years ago that Daly has appeared in court. Previous hearings have been held via videolink from prison.

Daly was taken to the court in a prison van and led inside handcuffed to a security officer. A number of relatives of the Omagh bomb victims were in court and sat a short distance from Daly.

Since his arrest he has consistently denied any involvement in the atrocity.
