Omagh and Castlederg to benefit from multi-million pound funding projects

A disused health centre in Omagh and the town of Castlederg are to benefit from £10m in funding from the UK government’s 'Levelling Up' Fund.

Omagh Health Centre is to receive redevelopment funds of more than £4m and will be transformed into an Enterprise and Innovation Hub for local businesses.

Castlederg has been earmarked for more than £6m in funding for its ‘Derg Active’ initiative.

This will go towards upgraded sports facilities for the area, a public realm scheme for the Diamond and a number of improvements to facilities and event spaces at Castle Park.

West Tyrone MP Órfhlaith Begley welcomed the funding for the Omagh Enterprise Company, and said the new facility could house 40 businesses and 200 employees.

"The site is strategically situated in the heart of the town and the Hub will act as a catalyst for the regeneration of Omagh town, contributing to the reduction in the levels of vacant properties,” She added.

“It will improve economic performance including local sustainable jobs, contributing to the Community Plan to develop an economy that is thriving, expanding and outward looking.

"I am delighted that Omagh Enterprise Company have secured £4.125m funding to bring this ground breaking project to fruition. I would like to commend Omagh Enterprise Company for their persistence and commitment which they have had over the years to the delivery of this."

Derry City and Strabane District Council accounted for a third of the total funding provided to Northern Ireland as part of the scheme, including the Derg Active project.

“It is excellent news for everyone involved in the application process and I want to congratulate everyone involved in bringing forward these project bids,” Council chair Alderman Graham Warke said.

“This is a really positive good news story for our Council area that will see a much needed cash injection to bring to fruition these exciting initiatives.
