Olympics opening ceremony: 'More gymnasts balancing on fewer gymnasts than ever before'

The 29th Olympic games begin today in Beijing.

The opening ceremony is expected to attract 3 billion TV viewers around the world. More than 80 heads of state will join 91,000 spectators and 15,000 performers. 35,000 fireworks will illuminate the five-hour show.

Despite concerns over pollution, security and human rights, organisers are promising a 16-day extravaganza of sport.
