Olympics icon Mary Lou Retton arrested for DUI as fans question where all their health scare donations went

Mary Lou Retton, once celebrated as “America’s Sweetheart” for her groundbreaking gymnastics achievements, now finds herself at the center of controversy following a DUI arrest. The incident has reignited scrutiny over the nearly half a million dollars raised during her 2023 health crisis.

On May 17, 2025, Retton was arrested in Marion County, West Virginia, for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs. Court records indicate she was released the same day after posting a $1,500 bond. Reports suggest she exhibited signs of impairment during field sobriety tests and refused a blood alcohol content test.

This arrest marks a stark contrast to Retton’s storied past. In 1984, she became the first American woman to win the Olympic all-around gold medal in gymnastics, securing her place in sports history.

A health crisis that captivated the nation

In October 2023, Retton faced a life-threatening battle with a rare form of pneumonia, leading to her hospitalization in the ICU. Her daughter, McKenna Kelley, revealed that Retton was uninsured and launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover medical expenses. The fundraiser garnered widespread attention, ultimately raising over $450,000.

Retton later shared that she was close to being placed on life support and continues to suffer from long-term lung damage, requiring daily oxygen.

Donor backlash and unanswered questions

While the public initially rallied around Retton, questions soon arose regarding the use of the donated funds. Critics pointed out the lack of transparency about how the money was spent, especially after Retton’s recovery. Some speculated that she might have had some form of insurance, contradicting earlier claims.

In response to the backlash, Retton and her family stated that any remaining funds would be donated to a charity, although specifics were not provided.

Referring to the controversy, Retton told Entertainment Tonight, “I don’t go down those rabbit holes.” And of her daughters, she added, “They didn’t deserve that. They were just trying to take care of me. I don’t care about the naysayers. There are trolls everywhere. It’s what makes us America. Everybody’s got an opinion, but it is what it is.”

A fall from grace

Retton’s recent legal troubles have further complicated her public image. Once a symbol of American perseverance and athletic excellence, her DUI arrest has led to renewed criticism and skepticism about her previous appeals for public support.

As the legal proceedings unfold, many are left wondering about the true nature of Retton’s circumstances and the fate of the substantial donations made in her time of need.
