Olympics "dream come true" as Motherwell's Deborah Kerr reaches second semi-final

Motherwell kayak star Deborah Kerr has described it as a "dream come true" as she reached her second Tokyo Olympics semi-final inside a week, after qualifying for the K1 500m this morning.

The 23-year-old paddler finished fifth in her heat in a time of 1:51.375 and was even faster in her quarter-final, finishing in 1:50.133 to claim third place and an automatic semi-final slot.

Kerr takes part in the semi-final tomorrow (Thursday) at around 1.58am BST to try and qualify for a second final on her Olympics debut, having achieved that feat in the K1 200m, where she finished eighth in a field of nine.

Ahead of tomorrow's action, Deborah said: "I'm so delighted. I was quite nervous ahead of that, I knew there was a chance to progress and I think I grabbed the opportunity today and made sure I managed the race.

"Tomorrow is going to be tough, we will see how it goes with the semi-finals.

"I don't feel too much pressure.

"This is a dream come true just to be here. We never thought we could get here so I am just delighted.

"The future of canoeing is bright, with three young British girls making their Olympic debut here.

"We had some great inspiration to follow in the footsteps of. Anything is possible.

"I just wanted to make sure I raced all four days, just to get the most and learn the most out of it.

"I am really enjoying it out here and trying to soak it all up."

Tomorrow is the last day of canoe sprint action for the British team, with Kerr bidding to reach that final.
