Olympics 2021: Huge amount of goodwill for Ireland's Olympians after classy gesture during opening ceremony

After a year's delay and many complications surrounding it, the Tokyo Olympics finally opened today.

The opening ceremony was full of colour, culture and celebration as athletes who had been training for their entire lives got to walk out behind their nations flag.

During the Parade of Athletes, Greece were the first nation to appear, followed by the Refugee Olympic Team and Iceland.

In alphabetical order (the Japanese alphabet, that is) Ireland were next.

Boxers Kellie Harrington and Brendan Irvine proudly led the Irish team out and their wide smiles were obvious even beneath their face masks as they were warmly welcomed into the stadium.

The whole Irish team bowed in unison towards the Japanese welcoming party in what was a lovely nod to the different culture they are immersed in for the duration of these Games.

And that gesture in particular has got huge praise online.

One man tweeted: "Big ups to the Irish team for stopping to bow as they enter the stadium. Really class move."

"Ireland bowing to the Japanese Olympic volunteers, the bloody darlings," added another.

While a third said: "Good on Ireland doing a traditional bow as they enter the stadium. That’s what all Japanese sports people do when they enter and exit training/ game fields."

Of course, it's not the first time the Irish sporting stars have bowed in an Asian nation - we all remember Damien Duff during the 2002 World Cup.
