A giant five-ring Olympic symbol reappeared on Tuesday at Odaiba Marine Park in Tokyo's Minato Ward. It had been temporarily removed about four months ago as a result of the Tokyo Games' postponement due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Originally installed by the Tokyo metropolitan government in January to promote enthusiasm for the Games, the symbol -- 15.3 meters long, 32.6 meters wide, and 1.7 meters in breadth -- was transported to a Yokohama shipyard in August to prevent deterioration from sea breeze. After some painting and cleaning, the symbol was hauled away from the shipyard and tugged back to its place near Odaiba Marine Park. The journey took about four hours.
An official of the Tokyo metropolitan government, who witnessed the operation, said: "We are in a difficult situation because of the coronavirus pandemic. But by looking at the symbol we want people to not only feel closer to the Games but also that the Games are coming."
The symbol will be on display until the Games finish.
