Olympic swimmer James Guy's moving response to gold medal leaves BBC viewers in tears

BBC viewers were left in tears in the early hours of Wednesday morning due to swimmer James Guy's emotional response to winning gold in the pool.

James and GB teammates Matthew Richards, Duncan Scott and Tom Dean went for glory in the 4x200m freestyle relay and ended up clinching victory after each swam fantastic legs.

Team GB saw off competition from the likes of the Russian Olympic Committee and Australia to take gold and James was still in the pool when he started crying at the result.

Tears then flowed again poolside and as the British quartet stood atop the medal rostrum in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre to accept their gold medals.

And, on seeing how much the win meant to James, 25, BBC viewers who stayed awake or got up in the early hours to watch the race, were equally moved.

One tweeted: "Sorry but i am obsessed with the gb swimmer James Guy who was crying when his team mate won individual gold and couldn’t stop crying when he and gb won in the relay"

Also left in tears by the sight of James crying, another swimming fan reacted: "James Guy is crying, I’m crying," and a third posted: "James Guy crying had me. I love Team GB."

James won two silvers in Rio five years ago and, composing himself after winning gold in Tokyo, said: "As a kid dreaming of an Olympic gold medal was my dream.

"After 25 years to do it finally, it's very emotional. With these four we have the best freestylers in the World. It's a dream come true.

James and his teammates came agonisingly close to getting a new world record with their winning time, missing out by just 0.03 seconds.
