Olympic-style medals ceremony to be staged - in the heart of Renfrewshire

Forget Tokyo, a Renfrewshire youth charity is to stage its own medals ceremony.

And Youth Interventions founder Louise Dempsey said: “It’s golds all the way for us.”

The project is in the middle of a quest to raise £10,000 so they can buy their own minibus.

PAISLEY DAILY EXPRESS: Live news as it happens

A squad has just returned after pedalling the ten miles round Cumbrae and follows an earlier hike to the top of ‘The Cobbler’.

The six-year-old group is based in Linwood’s Mossedge Village - and is now desperate to get out on the road across Renfrwshire.

Louise said: “While Team GB are winning all of these medals, I hoped to shout out to our very own winning team.

“Team YI gave it laldy with their cycle at Millport at the weekend and we are finding our own Olympians.”

It was part of the “Get The Weans A Minibus” campaign and follows the scaling of the 2,900 foot high Cobbler, which left many of the climbers with sore feet.

Louise said: “The Cobbler was really tough, but that along with Millport has taken our total raised to about £4,000.

“Our next endeavour may be kayaking, we are taking our lead from the kids.

“Next month we are also going up Windy Hill at Lochwinnoch in a competitive treasure hunt and afterwards we will have an Olympic-style medal awards ceremony back at the hub.”

Founder Louise set up the project in 2015 after spotting a gap in service provision in Renfrewshire for teenagers facing addiction and poor mental health.

The project aims to help the young people to engage with fun activities in a safe and secure environment that will help them make new friends, develop new skills and build their confidence and self-esteem.

Louise has a background in rehab and wanted to step-in and help after the accidental drugs overdose of a member of her family.

She is asking for “just a pound or two” to help via https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/youthinterventions1
