The Blue Impulse aerobatic squadron is planning to draw the Olympic logo over central Tokyo on July 23, the day the opening ceremony is held for the 2020 Tokyo Games, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.
A similar aerial display was staged at the 1964 Tokyo Games, with the Olympic logo drawn in the sky above the National Stadium. It is still remembered today as a symbolic moment of those Games.
The Blue Impulse are part of the Air Self-Defense Force's Matsushima Air Base in Miyagi Prefecture.
According to a Defense Ministry official, six of the planes will perform acrobatic flights around the National Stadium and the Tokyo metropolitan government building, both in Shinjuku Ward. They are planning to create five rings with blue, yellow, black, green and red smoke.
The Blue Impulse made an appearance last March when the Olympic flame arrived at the Matsushima Air Base from Greece. However, the Olympic logo that they tried to create in the sky was swept away by strong winds.
