The Tokyo Olympics is set to come to an end this weekend and bring the curtain down on another summer of sporting excellence.
Ever since the first modern Olympic games back in 1896, athletes from Merseyside have a proud heritage of successful showings in the Olympic Games that have greatly contributed to Team GB's medal haul.
There were two new additions at the Tokyo Olympics as Bianca Walkden took home a bronze medal in the +73kg taekwando event and Freya Anderson from Wirral was a part of the mixed 4 x 100m medley relay team who won gold for Team GB.

In celebration of their success, we thought we'd recognise many of the Olympics medal winners who at some point in their lives called Merseyside home.
John Rimmer
Liverpool's first gold medal winner at the modern Olympic games was John Rimmer - who triumphed at the 1900 Olympics held in Paris. The talented runner was born in Birkdale in 1878 - and was victorious in the 4000m steeple chase and the 5000m team race.
He continued to call Liverpool home throughout his life as he worked as a sergeant for Liverpool City police before he died in Anfield, aged 84 years-old.
William Dod
William Dod was born in Bebington and won a gold medal for Archery in the double York round at the 1908 Olympics held in London. Dod was a naturally talented sportsman as he was also a keen golfer and only took up competitive archery two years before the games.
Lottie Dod
William's sister was also a talented archer as she finished in second place to get the silver medal in the Double National Round at the 1908 Olympics. Lottie was a talented multi-sport athlete as she won the Wimbledon's Ladies Championship five times. The first came when she was 15-year-old, and she remains the youngest ever ladies' champion.
Banner Johnstone
Banner Johnstone was another resident from Bebington who triumphed at the 1908 London Olympics. The Cambridge University graduate was a part of the gold medal winning rowing team.
Herbert Haresnape
Herbert Haresnape was born in 1880 - and was a competitive swimmer from West Derby. He won a bronze medal in the men's 100 metre backstroke at the 1908 Olympics in London
William Marsden
William Marsden was a competitive sports shooter from Southport. Born in 1860, he won a bronze medal at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London.
Annie Spiers
Annie Spiers was a competitive swimmer born in Liverpool in 1889. She won a gold medal at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm as part of the women's 4x100m relay team.
William MacKune
Born in 1882, William MacKune was a gymnast who was part of Team GB's bronze finish at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm.
Ewart Horfsall
Ewart Horfsall was a British rower born in 1892 who won a silver medal in the rowing for Team GB at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp.
Grace McKenzie
Grace McKenzie was a swimmer from Garston who collected silver medals in both the 4 x100m freestyle relay at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp and the 1924 edition in Paris.
John Lander
John Lander was born in Liverpool in 1907 and was victorious in the men's rowing at the 1928 Olympics held in Amsterdam. Lander emigrated to Hong Kong for work after graduating from Cambridge University. He was sadly killed in action during World War II in 1941 after he had enlisted in the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps.
Julian Creus
Julian Creus was a weightlifter from Toxteth born in 1917. He competed in the -56kg category at the Olympics in London and won a silver medal.
John Geddes
John Geddes was a cyclist born in 1936. He won a bronze medal in the team pursuit at the 1956 Olympics held in Melbourne.
Stan Brittain
Arthur "Stan" Brittain was born in Knotty Ash and developed his cycling ability as part of the Woolton Wheelers. He later competed in the team road race at 1956 Olympics in Melbourne when he won a silver medal. Stan also finished the Tour de France during his career which was commemorated when he received the Golden Cycle Award by Merseyside Cycling Development.
James Lloyd
James Lloyd was a welterweight boxer born in 1939 who took a bronze medal home when he competed in the 1960 Olympics in Rome.
George Turpin
George Turpin is regarded as one of Liverpool's most renowned boxers. He was born in 1952 and boxed out of the Golden Gloves ABC in Toxteth. The Bantamweight fighter competed in the 1972 Olympics in Munich where he won a bronze medal.
Anthony Willis
Anthony Willis is a Light Welterweight fighter from Liverpool who earned a Bronze medal at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow - after he was defeated by Patrizio Oliva in the semi-final. He went on to have an impressive professional career when he won the British lightweight title in 1985.
Michelle Scutt
Although the 400m runner competed for Wales at the 1982 Commonwealth games, she was born in Liverpool in 1961. Scutt was part of the women's 4x400m relay team that won a bronze medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Margaret Kelly
Margaret Kelly was born in Liverpool in 1956. The Bootle born swimmer took home a silver medal as part of 4x100m medley relay team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Andy Jameson
Born in Crosby in 1965, Andrew Jameson was a competitive swimmer who won a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly competition at the 1988 games in Seoul.
Robin Reid
From Sefton, Robin Reid is a boxer born in 1971 . He achieved a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
Richard Priestman
Richard Priestman was a competitive archer born in 1955. He competed at three Olympics, winning a bronze medal at the 1988 games in Seoul and the the 1992 edition in Barcelona.
Chris Boardman
Born in Hoylake in 1968, Chris Boardman is a cyclist who won the gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Boardman is referred to as 'The Professor' due to his meticulous training methods and has broke the world hour record three times. He has also worn the prestigious yellow jersey on three occasions and has received an MBE for his services to the sport.
Steve Smith
James Stephenson Smith was a high jumper born in Liverpool in 1973. He took home a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta becoming the first member of team GB to achieve any success in the high jump since 1908.
Steve Cummings
Steve Cummings is a cyclist from Clatterbridge. Born in 1981, he finished in second place and won a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
David Price
The Liverpool boxer shot to fame at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Born in 1983, the heavyweight fighter finished in third place at the games and took home the bronze medal. He has since gone on to have a successful career as a professional with 25 wins out of 32 fights.
Beth Tweddle
Originally born in South Africa, Beth Tweddle moved to Bunbury when she was 18 months old and trained with the City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club. The talented gymnast picked up a bronze medal at the 2008 games in Beijing in the uneven bars contest.
Sam Quek
Sam Quek, from Wirral, was a part of the ladies field hockey team that won a gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. She has since launched a successful career in the media and is set to become a new team captain on the long-running show, A Question of Sport.
Anyika Onoura
The Liverpool Harrier was a part of the 4x400m relay team with Eilidh Doyle, Emily Diamond and Christine Ohuruogu that secured a bronze medal at the 2016 games in Rio.
Spyridon Gianniotis
Although he is a Greek competitive swimmer, Spyridon Gianniotis was actually born in Liverpool. His Liverpool-born mum met his dad while on holiday in Corfu - where the family moved after spending Spyridon’s early years on Merseyside.
The Olympian won a silver medal in the men's 10km open swim at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
Bianca Walkden
The taekwondo star from West Derby secured a bronze medal at the Olympics in Rio in 2016. The triple world champion put in another impressive showing in the Tokyo Olympics, but she was left heartbroken after she lost her semi-final in the dying seconds meaning she leaves the tournament with another bronze medal.
Freya Anderson
The star swimmer from Upton in Wirral was part of the mixed 4 x 100m medley relay team who won gold for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics. The 20-year-old started her swimming career when she was nine after attending lessons at Caldy Pool.
