An on-site inspection began Saturday for the marathon course slated to be used during the marathon event of the Tokyo Olympics to be held in Sapporo in August next year. The inspection, conducted by the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, began at 7 a.m. -- the scheduled start time of the race -- and the inspectors had a look around Odori Park -- the race's start and finish point. Conditions, including the weather, were examined. The temperature at the time the inspection began was 20 C with a low heat index.
"I believe that the athletes will be able to compete under extremely good conditions," said Deputy Executive Director of the Committee's Games Operations Bureau Yasuo Mori.
The chairman of the medical affairs committee, along with another member, came to Japan from France under special provision and accompanied the inspectors. According to Mori, they were evaluating the sheer amount of shade on the campus of Hokkaido University, a point athletes will pass three times during the competition. The committee was to continue its inspection until Sunday.
