Olympic flame arrives in Tokyo

The Olympic flame arrived in Tokyo on Friday morning, and the ceremony to mark the final leg of the torch relay in the capital was held at Komazawa Olympic Park General Sports Ground Athletic Field in Setagaya Ward.

The relay started on March 25 from J-Village, a sports facility straddling the towns of Naraha and Hirono in Fukushima Prefecture. The facility was used as an emergency response hub for workers during the aftermath of the 2011 Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.'s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant accident.

It has taken about 3-1/2 months to travel through 46 prefectures before reaching Tokyo.

The Tokyo leg of the relay is scheduled to take place over 15 days. The portion that uses public roads has been canceled, except on the islands around Tokyo, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The flame will light the Olympic cauldron on July 23, the final day of the relay, during the opening ceremony at the National Stadium in Shinjuku Ward.
