Olympic dreams remain intact for Man City Women as Great Britain, USA and Canada progress

The 12 Manchester City players competing at the Olympic Games continue to dream of gold in Tokyo as the group stage concluded on Tuesday.

As we enter the knockout phase of this particular event, Great Britain remain among the frontrunners after qualifying through the group stage.

They are set to be joined in the last-eight by Canada and the United States, with both countries counting City players among their ranks at the Olympics.

In the Group E finale, Team GB and Canada played out a 1-1 draw which saw both sides progress.

Indeed, it proved to be a memorable encounter for Scotland forward Weir, who netted the equaliser for Team GB as she was joined in the starting line-up by Bronze, Ellie Roebuck, Demi Stokes, Jill Scott and Georgia Stanway.

Ellen White was later introduced from the bench, meanwhile, as Janine Beckie flew the flag for Canada.

As for their fellow Team GB and City teammates, Steph Houghton was an unused substitute in that contest, while Kiera Walsh and Lauren Hemp were both rested.

Team GB had already qualified, on account of two straight victories to kick-off the competition.

Abby Dahlkemper didn't feature for the United States, but her teammates managed to progress from Group G after gaining a crucial point against Australia. They finished second in the group behind Sweden, who humbled the Americans in a devastating 3-0 defeat on the opening day.
