The organizing committee of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics is considering calling for the public to refrain from lining up along the torch relay route to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus, sources said.
A player from Nadeshiko Japan, who was a part of the team that won the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2011, will start the torch relay in Japan and leave the J-Village soccer facility in Fukushima Prefecture on March 26. About 10,000 celebrities and people connected to the Olympics will participate in the relay for 121 days nationwide.
To prevent the coronavirus from spreading, the organizing committee plans to hold the departing ceremony behind closed doors and ask people to refrain from going to see the relay in person, for the time being.
Runners will have their temperatures checked and will not be allowed to run if they do not feel well, and alcohol disinfectant will be provided at the venues related to the events.
The organizing committee is still weighing its options in regards to those who want to watch the torch relay in person in Fukushima and several other prefectures and will make an official announcement at least one week before the start of the relay.
