Olympic champion Sifan Hassan has pulled out of next month's London Marathon because of an Achilles injury sustained on a treadmill.
The Dutch runner, who did the 5,000m and 10,000m double at Tokyo 2020 before winning the women's marathon at Paris 2024, suffered the setback when training six weeks ago.
Ethiopia-born Hassan won the London Marathon in 2023 but has accepted she will not be fit in time for this year's race, which will be held on 26 April.
"To compete at that level, you need to be in perfect condition," said Hassan.
"After the incident, I hoped the injury would settle, but as training progressed it became clear that I wasn't able to prepare at the level I expect from myself.

"I have to listen to my body and focus on recovering properly."
She added on Instagram: "No London Marathon for me.
"I am disappointed because this race means so much to me but right now my Achilles is holding me back and I'm not ready to be at my best. I wish everyone racing an amazing day out there!"
The 2026 edition of the London Marathon takes place on Sunday 26 April.
