Olympians told to adhere to strict Covid protocols in Tokyo or pay heavy price

Olympic-bound stars have been warned that any “malicious” violation of Covid protocols could see them fined, disqualified or even deported.

Tokyo organisers yesterday revealed the grim regime athletes will be expected to operate under during the Games in July.

This includes eating alone, not talking in elevators or to drivers in official vehicles, clapping rather than singing or chanting and being tested daily.

There could be the added complication of a six-day hard quarantine on arrival in Japan as Britain is one of 10 countries in which the growth of the Delta variant is causing concern.

A Tokyo Games spokesperson said: “Quarantine for six days is required for some countries where the same treatment will be imposed on athletes and media. We wanted to make sure we have a countermeasure with variants.”

However, the British Olympic Association played down fears, saying: “We continue to have positive dialogue with the IOC and the Tokyo Organising Committee, following our letter to the President of Tokyo 2020.

“Our approach to additional testing measures and vaccinations for the delegation prior to departure and upon arrival demonstrate we are doing everything possible to minimise any risk to the people of Japan.”
