A sister of a Co Tyrone Olympian has spoken of her pride at her family member representing Ireland in the games in Tokyo.
Shirley McCay is a member of the successful Irish women’s hockey team who claimed victory in their first round game against South Africa on Saturday
Shirley’s sister Lyndsey said her family, who are originally from Drumquin in the county, will be watching keenly despite not being allowed to travel to Japan for the games.
Lyndsey was a long-serving member of staff in Asda in Omagh, and continues to work for the supermarket chain in its Antrim store.
“I am extremely proud of Shirley and all that she has achieved over the years. I have never met anyone with as much commitment and dedication to her sport,” Lyndsey said.
“It’s great to see Asda Omagh is with me in supporting Shirley! Anytime she is home she always makes sure to pop into store to stock up on her favourite treats before her next trip.
“As we can’t travel to Japan due to COVID-19 restrictions, a few of our close friends and family will be cheering her on at our family home in Drumquin.”
“With the time difference in Japan, there will certainly be a few late nights in our house, but we can’t wait!”
Asda Omagh general store manager Stephen Henry said the whole team at the supermarket is wishing Shirley and Team Ireland well at the Olympics.
“We are delighted to be backing Shirley in the Olympics and it’s great that she’s related to one of our own. Lyndsey has been a credit to the Omagh store and team work certainly comes naturally to her. We wish Shirley all the best in Tokyo and our staff will back the team all the way!”
