Olympian Aly Dixon bitten on bum by dog while running in Sunderland park

An Olympian was left with a sore bum after being bitten by a dog while she was running in a park in Sunderland.

Team GB athlete Aly Dixon said she had to get a tetanus jab following the incident on New Year's Eve as she completed her final run of the year at Herrington Country Park in Houghton-le-Spring.

The 50km World Champion said the owner was trying to catch the dog and apologised for it being so "excited".

She shared an image of her injuries on Twitter and said because she had two pairs of leggings on it didn't go into the muscle.

Aly had to have a tetanus jab, a course of antibiotics and said a bruise was beginning to come through but reassured her followers that she was "good".

She said: "Ending the year waiting for a tetanus jab after being bitten on the butt by a dog whilst running in Herrington Park this morning.

"Luckily I had two pairs of leggings on so it didn't go into the muscle. Had to have a tetanus jab and course of antibiotics."

The athlete told her followers that although she "loves dogs" she said owners need to control them better.

She said: "I love dogs but some owners need to control them better. The owner couldn't get hold of this one.

"In general, I love dogs, had two myself. But not too keen on them when they bite my bum!"

Her tweet led several people to share their own experiences with dog bites with many agreeing with Aly saying more control is needed.
