Olympiacos owner makes coronavirus statement after Arsenal Europa League tie at the Emirates

Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis has confirmed he has contracted coronavirus, less than two weeks after the Greek side knocked Arsenal out of the Europa League.

The Greek businessman, also owner of Championship promotion-chasers Nottingham Forest, revealed on social media that he had sustained the virus.

In a post on Instagram, written in Greek, he said: "The recent virus has visited me and I felt obliged to let the public know.

"I feel good as I take all the necessary measures and I discipline to the doctors’ instructions.I strongly advise all my fellow citizens to do the same. I wish all a quick recovery."

That could spark concerns for Arsenal, as Marinakis was in attendance for the second leg of the Europa League Round of 32 tie at the Emirates Stadium when the Gunners exited the competition.

Marinakis was seen in the dressing rooms, directors box, on the pitch and in the press areas on the evening of the game as he celebrated his team's victory.

In a statement, Arsenal told football.london: "Our home match with Olympiacos in the Europa League was played on Thursday 27th February and none of our staff who came into contact with him on that match day have reported any symptoms since.

"We continue to follow strict protocols with regard to coronavirus. We're following the Government health guidelines and have additional procedures in place to protect our players and staff.

"This has included regular deep cleaning of areas used by players at Emirates Stadium and our training centre."

On Monday, a government meeting with football's governing bodies and broadcasters was held in London but no further action to quell the spread of coronavirus has been annonced.

Cases in the UK have soared above 300, with five deaths so far, while the spread in Europe has also been widespread - with it reported that Olympiacos' Europa League clash with Wolves on Thursday will be played behind closed doors.

In Italy, Serie A has been suspended in April 3 following the introduction of a nation-wide quarantine, with Italy having the highest number of confirmed cases outside of China.
