Olly Murs spends 42nd birthday tackling fourth day of Soccer Aid challenge

Singer and Heart presenter Olly Murs at the start of ‘Olly Murs: Into The Unknown’, a five-day 400km challenge in which he will tackle some of the UK’s most demanding terrain by running, rowing and riding from Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium in Salford, to the London Stadium, east London, marking Soccer Aid for Unicef’s 20th anniversary (Peter Byrne/PA) - (PA Wire)

Singer Olly Murs was surprised by his wife Amelia as he spent his birthday taking part in the fourth day of a 400km endurance challenge for Soccer Aid’s 20th anniversary.

The presenter – who turned 42 on Thursday – was also told that his efforts have so far raised more than half a million pounds for the charity Unicef.

His five-day Into The Unknown challenge involves him running, cycling and rowing for 249 miles between Manchester and London, with no clue of what to expect on his route until just before he starts each day.

He began his birthday with a 3.1-mile (5km) row along the Grand Union Canal from Nether Heyford to Stoke Bruerne in Northamptonshire.

After an emotional reunion with his wife Amelia, This Morning presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard revealed live on Thursday morning’s ITV show that he would then be taking on a 11.8-mile (19km) bike ride from Stoke Bruerne to Wolverton in Buckinghamshire.

The third – and longest – day of the challenge on Wednesday was dogged by torrential rain and an unexpected reroute caused by a fire.

Murs recently travelled to Romania with Unicef where he visited the Pipera Primo Hub in northern Bucharest, a play, learning and parenting project which supports Ukrainian children who have been displaced by conflict, as well as Romanian children.

Murs will chronicle his journey in a one-off documentary, which will be available to watch on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player on May 29 at 9pm.
