Olivier Giroud reveals Chelsea's stunning target for Frank Lampard in his first season in charge

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has revealed the Blues' main aims this season following the appointment of club legend Frank Lampard as the new head coach.

Lampard replaced the outgoing Mauricio Sarri, but has just one year of management under his belt, leading Derby County to the Championship play-off final last season, where they lost out on a place in the Premier League to Aston Villa.

The former midfielder spent 13 years as a player at Stamford Bridge, playing 642 games for the club, and Giroud can only see his appointment as a positive move.

"He's a proper Chelsea legend," The striker told the BBC . "As a player, he was an example for the young players and the fans. He loves the badge and the club, so I think he is the right person.

"He's coming with big energy and we are working very hard, and in a good way."

The Blues are currently in the midst of a transfer ban, meaning that they will be unable to add to their squad over the course of the season, but despite this, Giroud believes that the youngsters in the squad will compensate for the lack of new faces.

"I think he's got the squad to compete in the different competitions this year," he said.

"Many young players sometimes have to go on loan to get some game time. This transfer ban gives them an opportunity to play more, show their qualities and - honestly, trust me - we've got plenty of young, talented players at Chelsea."

Chelsea qualified for the Champions League via a third place Premier League finish last season, the Blues also won the Europa League, but does Giroud think that they can add another European trophy to their cabinet in 2019/20?

"The Champions League is very tough. We've got a talented squad, but it's quite young. Everybody knows the Champions League is a lot about experience.

"We're going to fight in every competition - but the main target will be to compete with City and Liverpool for the Premier League title."
