Olivier Giroud makes Chelsea transfer revelation amid exit talk

Olivier Giroud has admitted he was close to quitting Chelsea for Serie A.

Giroud has slipped out of favour at Stamford Bridge amid the presence of Tammy Abraham and new signing Timo Werner.

The Frenchman was linked with an exit both in January and in the summer but he remains at Chelsea, though there was interest, he admits.

“I’ve been close to moving to Serie A," he told RMC Sport.

“They appreciated experienced players there, but the transfer didn’t materialise.

“For the future we will see what happens. I will decide by evaluating the opportunities I will have.

“I’m not ruling out anything, but for now I don’t see me returning to Ligue 1.

“I’d like to play at the highest level in Europe for another two or three years, then maybe I’ll go to the United States.”

Giroud has been with Chelsea since his 2018 move from Arsenal, going on to making 59 league appearances and scoring 13 times to date.

The 34-year-old is currently away on international duty with France and in what was his 100th France appearance, he netted twice in a 7-1 win over Ukraine on Wednesday.
